On a mission to end hunger in Utah

Utahns Against Hunger: On a mission to end hunger in Utah

How can an organization formed by community members fight the issue and provides relief for people in need of food? The answer seems to have no surprises: beating hunger is a life mission.

"Our mission is, essentially, to end hunger in Utah”, said Gina Cornia, Executive Director for Utahns Against Hunger, a non-profit organization based in Salt Lake City, that works hard to provide relief and hope for families who are struggling to put food on the table every day.

The organization works closely with government and other community associations in the intent of providing quality nutrition for people in need, as well as acting as an advocate for causes that involve food issues, such as a new Farm Bill, that has passed the Senate, but is still waiting a vote at the House.

According to Cornia, “we work together with Utah’s senators and representatives at Congress in order to pass a new Farm Bill, that would provide relief for families in extreme need, as well as helping farmers.” The bill would allow more nutritious options for families, since the government purchases exceeding production from farmers in order to provide food for nutrition programs.

Other actions done by the organization include participation in activities like Food Drive, Food Stamps’ assistance and collaboration with Utah Food Bank, as well as actions with minority groups, such as refugees. One in eight families in Utah faces difficulties putting food on table and minorities are the most vulnerable groups.

The challenge is huge. We will only have everybody effectively fed if we only unite and face the problem. And Utahns Against Hunger seems to be doing the job really right, making lives better for the needy ones.
