Tony Caputo’s, Stone Ground Breads,
Nathan’s 100% Beef hotdogs and more ON CAMPUS!
Tony Caputo's is located on the first floor of the Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities Bldg |
Made
to order breakfast burritos, sandwiches and lunch sandwiches, all off the
original Caputo’s menu, are offered in the 1st floor of the Tanner
Irish Humanities Building. The Starley Commons café in the WEB bldg offers
daily-prepared on-the-go foods including sandwiches, wraps, soups, bagels,
donuts and more using locally outsourced products.
Tony
Caputo’s is a Market and Deli originating in Salt Lake and is a leading
purveyor of distinctive Regional Italian and Southern European foods. There you
can order “The Caputo” on a hard Italian roll filled with prosciutto, salami,
provolone, lettuce and tomatoes. “The Caputo sandwich is a student favorite”,
said Andy, and employee of the café. Vegetarian options are also available, like a caprese salad with fresh mozzarella cheese, garden tomatoes, sweet basil, and extra virgin olive oil, yumm! Other items include pasta, a daily special, desserts, coffee, and Italian chocolates.
The
café located in the Starley Food Commons offers fresh wraps, salads, and
sandwiches prepared with local breads from Stoneground Bakery, a premier Utah
bakery. The sandwiches and wraps are pretty hearty, filled with lots of meat
and veggies, just the right balance for a nutritious meal. The bread’s grains
are locally milled in Utah, with grains from Utah, Idaho, and Montana. Daily
soups are also offered, like Buffalo Chili, made with real buffalo. There are
two featured daily soups, provided by The Pointe, a former contracted food
service provider for the U, until spring of 2012. “I get soups from The Pointe
because the students love it”, said Ken Marlow, who independently manages the
café since The Pointes departure and has been doing so for the past 5 ½ years.
The Starley
Food commons offers Nathan’s famous ¼ lb 100% beef hot dogs complete with a condiments
bar with all the works and if you’re lucky, there might be pepperoncini or
jalapenos to top them off. The salads are prepared every morning by Marlow
himself and he even makes a “cilantro lime vinaigrette” reminiscent of Café
Rio’s. Marlow tries very hard to “prepare meals that are still nutritionally
balanced, but a hit with the students”.
There are also a few prepared microwave entrees, as well as a
handful or microwave and Panini presses available for students to use. As you
wait in line for the cashier there are also treats from Cookies by Design to
fill your sweet tooth.
As students, we all know the two major food outlets on campus
are located in the Union and The Heritage Commons up by the dorms. There are also little “outtake” cafes around
campus, but everyone should visit these cafes and get a little taste of our
local eateries.

Chartwell’s “Outtake Café” locations:
I really like what you wrote about, because I feel students don't always realize all the options there are for eating on campus. I thought you made a lot of good points on mentioning different options for food and styles of food. In some places it seemed like it jumped around a bit and I didn't fully understand which place you were talking about
ReplyDeleteand what their options were at that specific location. Overall, good job.

I have actually eaten at the Starley Food Commons; they have great food and great selection. To top it off, its fairly affordable as well. My favorite things to get there are the wraps; they have a delicious chicken ceaser salad wrap and also a daily special wrap that changes from time to time.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet tried Caputo’s place, but I have heard many great things about it, and will definitely be stopping in to get “the Caputo”!!!
